Hi guys,
sorry for asking a probably stupid question, but I seem to hit a wall right now. How on earth do you activate native nVidia graphics using icaros desktop?
Cheers
lars

If the card is supported by the driver, it should be activated automatically by the default Icaros boot entry.
-
thank you, I got a GTX460, that should work, right?
cheers
edit: I dug through my pile of old hardware and found an 8800gtx, that one worked after removing the vesa entry, so my 460 seems to be unsupported
-
Sorry to barge in like this, but my question seems relevant to the topic. What are some of the best supported Nvidia GPUs? This page (https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/x86_support) is a bit of a mess...

Fermi cards should be supported, my GTX 460 worked with AROS although at a reduced clock rate (the old nouveau in AROS doesn't support reclocking). I guess not all of them are compatible.

I got another GTX 460, but that one needs 2 times PCIE power, the PSU only has one and it's kinda hard to get an adaptor on a friggin sunday

If that one won't work either I wouldn't worry about it too much. Fermi cards will unfortunately run at the lowest clock speed under AROS, so even older cards can outperform them. The power consumption will be rather low though, if that matters ;D

Hi. Sorry for late answers:
1. Supported Nvidia cards run automatically on Icaros Desktop with default GRUB option. If Icaros can't find suitable hardware, it falls back to VESA mode (instead of AROS' 16-color VGA mode). In a nutshell: if you see ScreenMode listing many resolutions, it means that the native driver is running.
2. best Nvidia GPUs for AROS are the ones ranging between the GeForce 6000 and 9000 series. Older and newer ones will produce unpredictable results.

It seems I may be able to pick up an 8800 GTX for around $15. However, the support page (https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/x86_support) says "2d works but no accelerated 3d" and links to a non-existent page on aros-exec.org for more information... Can @mtrr or indeed anyone confirm that accelerated 3d now works on the 8800 GTX?

I'll check later today

Indeed, it's quite strange that 3D doesn't work on 8800 GTX BUT works correctly on the other variants of the same chip: 8800 GTS and 8800 GT. I can only tell you at home I have a 7800 and it works well in both 2D and 3D. Pay attention to monitor frequencies, though.

Thanks. I'll probably forgo the 8800 GTX and get an 8800 GT instead, no matter what @mtrr reports back. It costs about the same and seems to have working 3d. Compared to the 8800 GTX, its performance is only slightly worse (https://www.anandtech.com/show/2365/9) and its power consumption is much better (https://www.anandtech.com/show/2365/13).
In any case, I guess either is sufficient for most games on AROS?

Absolutely.

The have different GPUs. Usually high end cards come out first, followed by the low to mid range with an improved manufacturing process. The 8800 GT has the G92 GPU while the 8800 GTX has the older G80 one.

I have to apologize, it's not an 8800gtx but a 8800gts.
cheers

Is the GT 650M working? It's in my Dell Laptop, using Kepler and Optimus with the integrated Intel HD 4000.
-
I don think so...

Hello, I just bought a nvidia quadro FX 380,
is compatible with Aros?
"Who has modified the wikipedia and why are not compatible FX graphics?"
A greeting.

the minimum requirement for plays all 3d games optimally is on geforce 6000 series, well if have 512 mb of ram, i'm tested also doom 3 with success
